Happy new year to you all and I hope you are already setting and achieving some of your goals.
I have been reflecting on what my first post will be this year, and thank God I got inspired to share about this as I was engaging with a potential candidate…
As a recruiter who is always on the lookout for candidates to fill multiple roles, I am learning to be more patient. Not all candidates are available or ready for a new job at the moment. At times, it can be disappointing to discover a promising candidate and engage with them, only to learn that they are not ready to apply. The disappointment may intensify, especially if you have progressed to the interview or offer stage, only to find out they have accepted another role. To make things worse, some candidates do not even inform you early enough or at all that they are withdrawing from the process (I will write about this in my next post).
The question is “should I be disappointed?” or “do I have an opportunity to build a more lasting and impactful relationship with potential candidates that may fill the roles in the future?”. I am choosing to embrace the second option and learning to engage and build relationships every day. I believe this is a better approach – not all candidates will join the train today but by “making my rounds” and keeping the door open at the right time, they could jump along perhaps in the next month, the next year or a couple of years.
An African proverb says “patience can cook a stone”.
